Monorail passing a Walt Disney World resort near Magic Kingdom

Hotels Near Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is the one Disney park where the hotel genuinely changes the day, because the car park does not sit next to the entrance.

30-Second Verdict

Three resorts remove the arrival problem completely: Disney's Contemporary Resort by walking, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa by monorail and boat. Disney's Wilderness Lodge does it by boat for less. Every other hotel in Orlando, on property or off, arrives the long way.

Why the arrival matters more here

At EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom you park, walk and enter. Magic Kingdom is separated from its main car park by water, so drivers park at the Transportation and Ticket Center and then take a monorail or a ferry to the gate. That extra leg happens twice a day, with everybody else, and it is the reason a hotel choice here is worth more than at the other three parks.

It is also why an off-site hotel that is genuinely close to Disney Springs can still be a slow trip to Magic Kingdom. Proximity to the property is not proximity to this gate.

Disney's Contemporary Resort in Magic Kingdom area
The only walk worth calling a walk

Disney's Contemporary Resort

Magic Kingdom area

  • Closest to Park
  • On-Site
  • Walkable to a park
  • Pool
  • Water slides
  • Works without a car

A short, flat walking path connects the resort to the Magic Kingdom entrance. On the last night of a trip, with a tired five-year-old, that path is worth more than any amenity on this page.

Best for: Families with young children and late park nights

Watch out: The monorail runs through the building, which some people find charming and others find loud. Ask about the tower against the garden wing.

Best for a family of five

Magic Kingdom area★★★★

  • Best for Families
  • On-Site
  • Pool
  • Water slides
  • Works without a car

Standard rooms published for five, a monorail station on the property and a boat across the lagoon. It solves the party-of-five problem and the arrival problem in one booking.

Best for: Parties of five who want the monorail

Watch out: Deluxe pricing, and the resort is spread along the lagoon so the walk from some longhouses is real.

Monorail, boat and a walking path all serve the same gate from here, which means a breakdown on one of them does not end your morning. Standard rooms sleep five.

Best for: Travelers who want redundancy in the transport

Watch out: It is the most expensive resort Disney operates.

Disney's Wilderness Lodge

  • Water slides
  • Spa
  • Works without a car

A boat to Magic Kingdom at the lower end of Deluxe pricing, in a resort with genuinely strong theming and a good pool.

Best for: Families who want a Deluxe and a short arrival for less

Watch out: When the boat is not running the alternative is a bus, which puts you back in the general queue.

The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort

Magic Kingdom area★★★★

  • Best for Families
  • On-Site
  • Full kitchens
  • Family suites
  • Pool
  • Works without a car

A standalone cabin sleeping six with a full kitchen, and a boat to Magic Kingdom. No other Disney accommodation combines that occupancy, that kitchen and that arrival.

Best for: Families of six who want a kitchen and a short arrival

Watch out: Fort Wilderness is very large, so there is an internal bus ride before you reach the boat dock.

If those are out of budget

The next best position is a Disney resort with a direct bus, because Disney buses deliver to the Magic Kingdom bus stop at the gate rather than to the Transportation and Ticket Center. That means a Value resort bus arrives closer than a car does.

Off-site, the honest answer is that no hotel near Magic Kingdom gets you a short arrival. If your week is Magic Kingdom-heavy and the budget is tight, a Disney Value resort will do more for your mornings than a nicer off-site room.

The trade-off

The Magic Kingdom resorts are the most expensive rooms on Disney property, and what you are buying is about thirty to forty minutes a day. On a two-day Magic Kingdom trip that is poor value. On a five-day one with small children it is often the best money in the budget.

Common questions

Which hotel is closest to Magic Kingdom?

Disney's Contemporary Resort, which has a walking path to the entrance. Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa also has a walking path, along with the monorail and a boat.

Can you walk to Magic Kingdom from any hotel?

From Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. No off-site hotel in Orlando is within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom entrance.

Is the monorail worth paying extra for?

On a Magic Kingdom-heavy trip, yes, because it removes the Transportation and Ticket Center leg in both directions. On a trip with one Magic Kingdom day out of five, you are paying a Deluxe premium for a benefit you will use twice.
