Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa with the monorail passing

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

The Grand Floridian is the only Disney resort with three separate ways to reach Magic Kingdom, and the most expensive room Disney sells.

30-Second Verdict

Book the Grand Floridian if Magic Kingdom is most of your week and you want the shortest, most reliable arrival. Skip it if your park days are spread across all four parks, because you would be paying a large premium for transport you use once or twice.

Best for

  • Magic Kingdom-heavy itineraries
  • Families of five, since standard rooms are published for five
  • Travelers who want redundancy in the transport
  • Special occasions where the setting is part of the point

Skip it if

  • Your week is spread evenly across the four parks
  • You want the best room finish for the money, which is elsewhere in Orlando
  • You need a room for six
  • The rate would come out of the food or ticket budget

Location and park fit

The Grand Floridian sits on the Magic Kingdom monorail loop with a boat across the lagoon and a walking path to the park entrance. That combination is unique on Disney property and it is the reason to pay the rate.

For EPCOT you change monorails at the Transportation and Ticket Center. For Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom you take a bus, which is the same as almost everywhere else.

Rooms and family fit

Standard rooms are published for five, which is unusual and removes the suite problem for a party of that size. Villas are available alongside the resort rooms.

The rooms are handsome and, judged purely as hotel rooms against Four Seasons or the Ritz-Carlton at a comparable price, not the strongest in Orlando.

Transport and mobility

Monorail, boat and a walking path to Magic Kingdom, and Disney buses to Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. No car needed at any point of a Disney trip.

Park benefits

Early Theme Park Entry applies as a Disney resort guest, and Deluxe resorts have also carried Extended Evening Theme Park Hours on selected nights.

Disney sets which hotels qualify for Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours, and has changed both. Confirm the current rules on the official Walt Disney World site before booking for a benefit.

Pool and rest-day fit

There is a themed pool with a slide and a full spa. It is pleasant rather than remarkable, and it is not the reason to stay here.

Cost beyond the room

Disney resort guests have not been charged for theme park parking, and Disney has historically not levied a resort fee. Food on Disney property costs more than off it, which is the cost people underestimate.

The trade-off

You are buying thirty to forty minutes a day of transfer time at Magic Kingdom, at the highest room rate Disney charges. On a five-day Magic Kingdom trip with young children that is often the best money in the budget. On a one-day one it is not.

Alternatives worth comparing

Book this hotel

Rates in Orlando move constantly and depend on your dates, so check the current price rather than working from any figure on a website. Confirm resort fees, parking charges and any theme park benefit directly with the hotel or the park before you book.

Common questions

Can you walk to Magic Kingdom from the Grand Floridian?

There is a walking path to the Magic Kingdom entrance, alongside the monorail and the boat. Disney's Contemporary Resort has the shorter of the two walking routes.

Do Grand Floridian rooms sleep 5?

Standard rooms are published for five, which is unusual at Disney. Confirm the room category when booking, because occupancy changes with refurbishments.

Is the Grand Floridian worth the money?

For a Magic Kingdom-focused trip, the transport alone can justify it. Judged as a hotel against the top of the Orlando market, you are paying for the location rather than the room.
