International Drive hotels beside a quieter Lake Buena Vista street

International Drive vs Lake Buena Vista Hotels

These are the two areas most Orlando visitors end up choosing between, and they suit almost opposite trips.

30-Second Verdict

Lake Buena Vista if Walt Disney World is most of your week. International Drive if Universal, Epic Universe, SeaWorld or the Convention Center appear on the itinerary, or if you want to walk to dinner. For a week evenly split between Disney and Universal, I-Drive is the smaller compromise.

The dining difference is bigger than it sounds

International Drive has an unusual density of restaurants for an American hotel strip. From most I-Drive hotels you can walk to somewhere different every night for a week, which removes an entire category of daily decision-making.

Lake Buena Vista does not have that outside Disney Springs. From most hotels in the area, dinner is a drive or a hotel restaurant. On a week-long trip that adds up, both in cost and in the amount of driving after a long park day.

The trade-off

I-Drive trades a resort atmosphere for convenience and choice. Lake Buena Vista trades choice for shorter Disney mornings. Neither is better in the abstract, and one of them is clearly better for your itinerary.

Getting to the parks

From Lake Buena Vista, the Disney entrances are a short drive and the Universal parks are a genuine cross-city journey. From International Drive it is the reverse, with Universal and Epic Universe close and Disney a longer trip.

Both areas have hotels running theme park shuttles, and in both cases the shuttle is a way to avoid parking rather than a transport system. Check departure times before relying on one.

Which is cheaper?

International Drive has a wider range, including genuinely cheap rooms in the middle of the strip that have no equivalent in Lake Buena Vista. It also has the most expensive convention hotels in the city, so the average is misleading.

For a family of six wanting a villa, both areas have condo resorts at similar levels. For a couple wanting a basic room near restaurants, I-Drive is clearly cheaper.

The decision

Choose International Drive if

  • Universal, Epic Universe or SeaWorld is on the itinerary.
  • You have an event at the Convention Center.
  • You want to walk to dinner rather than drive to it.
  • The room budget is tight and you still want a usable location.
  • Your week is split between Disney and Universal.

Choose Lake Buena Vista if

  • Walt Disney World is three or more of your park days.
  • You want the shortest possible Disney mornings off property.
  • You want a quieter setting after a park day.
  • You are looking at Disney Springs area hotels for a walkable evening.
  • You want a condo resort close to the Disney entrances.

Common questions

Is International Drive too far from Disney?

It is a real drive rather than an impossible one, and you will pay theme park parking on each Disney day. For one or two Disney days in a Universal-focused week it is fine. For four Disney days it is the wrong base.

Is Lake Buena Vista walkable?

Only the Hotel Plaza Boulevard hotels, which can walk to Disney Springs. The rest of the area is built around car travel, with wide roads and few pedestrian routes.

Which area is better for families?

Lake Buena Vista for a Disney family, because the mornings are shorter and the condo resorts are close. International Drive for a family visiting more than one resort, because the dining and the central position save time everywhere else.
