Family walking towards a hotel pool area in Orlando

Best Family Hotels in Orlando

Family-friendly means almost nothing in a city built for families. The questions that separate these hotels are how many people fit in the room, and what happens on the day nobody goes to a park.

30-Second Verdict

Family of four: almost anything works, so choose on area and price. Family of five: Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, Loews Royal Pacific Resort or an all-suite hotel. Family of six: Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort, Disney's Art of Animation Resort or a two-bedroom villa. Seven or more: a villa or condo resort, not a hotel.

Start with the occupancy limit, not the theming

The single most useful fact in Orlando hotel booking is that most standard rooms are published for a maximum of four people, and that limit is contractual rather than advisory. A family of five looking at a two-queen room is looking at a room they cannot book.

That is why this page is organised by party size. Everything else, the theming, the character breakfasts, the splash pad, is a preference. Occupancy is a constraint.

The picks

Best for a Universal family of six

Universal Orlando★★★8.5/106,040 reviews

  • Best for Families
  • On-Site
  • Family suites
  • Lazy river
  • Kitchenette
  • Water slides

The family suite has two sleeping areas, a kitchenette and a published capacity of six, which is rare at this price anywhere in Orlando and unique on Universal property. The lazy river and the bowling alley make a non-park day easy to fill.

Best for: Five or six people on a Universal or Epic Universe trip

Watch out: Rooms are value-tier and the resort is very large. Ask for a building near the main pool if walking distance matters.

Best for a Disney family of six

Hollywood Studios area★★★

  • Best for Families
  • Best Value
  • Family suites
  • Kitchenette
  • Works without a car

Family suites for six at close to Value pricing, on the Skyliner line to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. For a family that would otherwise book two rooms, this is usually both cheaper and simpler.

Best for: Five or six people who want to stay on Disney property

Watch out: It is loud and heavily themed for young children. Teenagers tend to be unimpressed.

Caribe Royale Orlando in Lake Buena Vista
Best all-suite hotel near Disney

Caribe Royale Orlando

Lake Buena Vista★★★★8.8/103,570 reviews

  • Best Value
  • Best for Families
  • Family suites
  • Kitchenette
  • Pool
  • Water slides
  • Theme park shuttle

Every standard unit is a one-bedroom suite with a door between the bedroom and the living area. With small children on an early bedtime, that door is worth more than any amenity list.

Best for: Families of four or five who want a separate living room

Watch out: Check the published occupancy for the exact suite you book. A separate living area does not automatically mean a higher person limit.

Best rest-day hotel for a Disney family

Bonnet Creek★★★★★8.3/10437 reviews

  • Best Rest Day
  • Lazy river
  • Water slides
  • Theme park shuttle
  • Spa

A lazy river and a water slide on Disney property, with a Disney theme park shuttle. It is the answer when the children need a day off and driving anywhere would defeat the purpose.

Best for: Families with a non-park day in the middle of the week

Watch out: Standard rooms follow the usual four-person limit, so a family of five or six is looking at a suite here.

Best bad-weather family hotel

Kissimmee★★★★9/101,058 reviews

  • Best for Families
  • Water park
  • Water slides
  • Theme park shuttle

The covered atrium means a rainy afternoon still has somewhere to go, which almost no other Orlando resort can say. The water park handles the rest of the day.

Best for: Families who need an indoor plan

Watch out: Convention crowds can change the feel of the property from week to week.

Cheapest on-site room that sleeps six

Universal Orlando★★★8.8/105,064 reviews

  • Best Value
  • On-Site
  • Family suites
  • Kitchenette
  • Theme park shuttle
  • Pool

A two-bedroom suite with a published capacity of six at Universal's value tier. You give up the walking paths that the Premier hotels have and keep the on-site early park admission benefit.

Best for: Budget-conscious families of five or six at Universal

Watch out: Endless Summer is shuttle-only. There is no walking route to the parks from here.

Sheraton Vistana Resort Villas in Lake Buena Vista
Best villa resort for a large family

Sheraton Vistana Resort Villas

Lake Buena Vista★★★★9/102,254 reviews

  • Best for Large Families
  • Full kitchens
  • Family suites
  • Pool
  • Extended stay

Two-bedroom villas with a full kitchen and a washer and dryer, close to the Lake Buena Vista side of Disney. For a week with seven or eight people, this is a different and much cheaper category from booking three hotel rooms.

Best for: Seven or more people, or two families travelling together

Watch out: Villa resorts sell timeshare. Expect an invitation to a presentation at check-in, and feel free to decline it.

Best for keeping the food bill down

Disney Springs area

  • Free Breakfast
  • Free breakfast
  • Pool
  • Water slides
  • Theme park shuttle

Free hot breakfast and free food and drinks in the early evening are part of the rate. Over five nights with four or five people that changes the arithmetic of the whole trip, not just the room.

Best for: Families who eat breakfast and an early dinner at the hotel

Watch out: It carries no theme park benefit, so an early entry advantage is not part of what you are buying.

Best family luxury resort

Golden Oak, Walt Disney World★★★★★9.3/10157 reviews

  • Luxury Pick
  • Lazy river
  • Water slides
  • Spa
  • Luxury

A water park with a lazy river for the children and a separate adults-only pool for everyone else, plus Disney theme park transportation as an Official Walt Disney World Hotel. It is the least compromised family luxury option in the city.

Best for: Families who want the water park and the spa in one place

Watch out: Rates are far above everything else on this page.

Things that matter more than they look

  • A door between the bedroom and the living area. With young children this decides whether the adults have an evening.
  • A fridge that is not a mini-bar. Milk, medication and leftovers all need space.
  • Laundry. A week in Florida with children produces a lot of wet clothing. Villa resorts and extended-stay brands have in-unit machines.
  • How long the walk from the room to the pool is. In a large resort this is the difference between three pool sessions and one.
  • Whether the shuttle can carry your whole party at once. Off-site shuttles have limited capacity at peak times.

Common questions

Which Orlando hotels sleep 6 people in one room?

The reliable options are Universal's family and two-bedroom suites at Cabana Bay and Endless Summer, Disney's family suites at Art of Animation and All-Star Music, the Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort, and two-bedroom villas at condo resorts such as Sheraton Vistana and Floridays.

See Orlando hotels for a family of 6.

Is it cheaper to book two rooms or one family suite?

Usually the suite, and it is always simpler. Two rooms means two rates, two sets of taxes and a family split across a corridor. Compare the all-in nightly total of one suite against two standard rooms before deciding, because at Value resort prices the gap can occasionally go the other way.

Do Orlando hotels charge for children?

Most do not charge extra for children within the published occupancy limit, but the limit itself counts every person in the room regardless of age at many properties. Some hotels count children over a certain age as adults. Check the occupancy rules for the specific room type rather than assuming.

What is the best Orlando hotel for toddlers?

Something with a separate sleeping area, a pool with a shallow or zero-entry section, and a short walk from the room to that pool. Caribe Royale and the Universal family suites all meet that description. A hotel where the pool is a ten-minute walk from your building will not get used.
