Disney resort transport beside an off-site Orlando hotel

On-Site vs Off-Site Disney Hotels

The room is cheaper off-site. The trip often is not. Here is the arithmetic people usually skip.

30-Second Verdict

Stay on Disney property if the week is mostly Disney park days, if you would rather not drive, or if a family suite for six is cheaper than two off-site rooms. Stay off-site if you want a lazy river, a kitchen, included breakfast, more space, or if you are also visiting Universal.

The costs people forget

Forgotten on the off-site side

  • Theme park parking, charged per day, every park day.
  • Hotel parking, which many off-site hotels charge separately.
  • A resort fee, which is common at off-site resorts and not always obvious at booking.
  • The rental car itself, plus fuel.
  • Roughly forty minutes a day of driving and parking, in both directions.

Forgotten on the on-site side

  • Food, which is more expensive on Disney property than off it.
  • The lack of a kitchen at almost every price point.
  • Bus waits at park opening and closing, which are real at the Value resorts.
  • The premium for a room that sleeps five or six, which pushes many families into Deluxe pricing.
The trade-off

The single biggest variable is party size. For two adults, off-site is usually cheaper overall. For five or six people who would need two off-site rooms against one on-site family suite, on-site frequently wins outright.

What Early Theme Park Entry is actually worth

Thirty minutes before general opening sounds minor and is not. At a park like Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios it puts you at the busiest attractions before the queues form, which can save an hour or more later in the day.

It is worth building the hotel decision around only if you will genuinely be at the gate that early, several mornings in a row. Families with young children often cannot, and for them the benefit is close to theoretical.

When off-site clearly wins

Off-site is the better decision when the week has non-park days in it. Disney's Value and Moderate resorts have no lazy river and no water park, so a day at the hotel is a day at a rectangular pool. Bonnet Creek and the Lake Buena Vista resorts give you somewhere to spend that day.

It also wins when you need a kitchen, when you want breakfast in the rate, and when the trip includes Universal, because a Disney resort is a poor base for a Universal day.

The decision

Stay on Disney property if

  • Four or more of your five nights are Disney park days.
  • You are not renting a car.
  • Your party is five or six and a family suite fits.
  • You want the earliest possible park entry.
  • Young children need an easy mid-day return to the room.

Stay off-site if

  • The week includes two or more non-park days.
  • You want a lazy river or a water park.
  • You need a full kitchen or in-room laundry.
  • Breakfast being included matters to your budget.
  • You are also visiting Universal or Epic Universe.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to stay on-site or off-site at Disney World?

The room is cheaper off-site. The trip depends on party size and how many park days you have. Add theme park parking, hotel parking, any resort fee and the rental car to the off-site rate before comparing, and for a family of five or six compare one on-site family suite against two off-site rooms.

Do off-site hotels get Early Theme Park Entry?

Only those Disney designates. That list has included Official Walt Disney World Hotels and, at times, the Disney Springs Resort Area hotels. It changes, so confirm the current position on the official Walt Disney World site.

Is Disney transport better than a rental car?

For Magic Kingdom, yes, because Disney buses drop at the gate while cars park at the Transportation and Ticket Center. For the other three parks a car is often faster, and it costs you parking each day.

Can you use Disney transport if you stay off-site?

No. Disney's buses, boats, monorail and Skyliner are for resort guests travelling within the property. Off-site hotels run their own shuttles on their own schedules.
